Crossroads
“here comes the demon ,”I said aloud .the thin black car growled to a halt, and the demon exited. He straightened his tie as the car drove away. Avoiding his eyes I removed my hat and led him into the living room.
We talked for some time. As our meeting began I noticed a shiny black beetle on the wall behind him , dragging itself slowly upward through the thickness of the afternoon. The demon seemed not to notice. We talked for several hours. He took no sustenance in all the time he stayed: I felt like an insect as I scrabbled about in front of him seeing to my needs.
After he left I felt tired and somewhat numb. I bathed my face in cold water and took off my new leather shoes . I sighed, and the coloured bunting around the doors and windows looked more faded than ever.
